Defending champion Albany outguns Minnesota 69-56, returns to AF1 title game

ALBANY, N.Y. — Sam Castronova threw nine touchdown passes, and defending champion Albany survived a furious fourth-quarter charge by Minnesota to defeat the Monsters 69-56 Saturday in an Arena Football One semifinal at MVP Arena.

The Firebirds advanced to their third consecutive arena football championship game and will face the winner of Sunday’s semifinal between the Michigan Arsenal and top-seeded Nashville Kats. Nashville would host the Arena Crown with a victory, while Michigan’s upset would bring the championship game back to Albany.

Castronova completed 20 of 27 passes for 304 yards without an interception, repeatedly exploiting Minnesota’s secondary with deep strikes and red-zone precision. Duane Brown caught six passes for 108 yards and four touchdowns, while Darien Townsend added six receptions for 109 yards and four scores.

The Firebirds needed nearly all of that production to withstand a remarkable performance by Minnesota quarterback Ja’Vonte Johnson, who completed 27 of 49 passes for 416 yards and eight touchdowns. But Johnson’s two interceptions — including a potentially game-tying two-point conversion attempt in the final three minutes — proved costly.

Minnesota pulled within 58-56 on Johnson’s eighth touchdown pass with 2:41 remaining, then kept its offense on the field for a two-point conversion that would have tied the game.

Albany linebacker Drew Singleton intercepted Johnson’s conversion pass in the end zone and returned it the length of the field for two points, turning Minnesota’s chance to tie into a 60-56 Firebirds lead.

Castronova delivered the knockout blow moments later, connecting with Townsend for a 39-yard touchdown. Kicker Bailey Hale added the extra point and a deuce on the ensuing kickoff, completing Albany’s decisive 11-point closing run.

It was an abrupt ending to an otherwise relentless Minnesota comeback.

The Monsters generated 416 yards through the air and scored on three one-play possessions in the first half. Johnson connected with his three primary receivers on 26 of his 27 completions, distributing the ball effectively against an Albany defense that surrendered repeated explosive plays.

Jarvai Flowers delivered one of the most productive receiving performances of the AF1 season, catching seven passes for 157 yards and five touchdowns. Carlos Thompson Jr. had 10 receptions for 193 yards and two scores, while LeDarian McAllister caught nine passes for 63 yards.

Offensive lineman Gunner Hurlburt supplied Minnesota’s other touchdown on a 3-yard reception.

Flowers, Thompson and McAllister combined for 413 receiving yards, but the Monsters received no rushing production to balance their offense. Minnesota finished with one net rushing yard and was forced to rely almost entirely on Johnson’s arm.

Albany was similarly one-dimensional, finishing with only seven rushing yards. The difference was Castronova’s efficiency and ball security. The reigning AF1 Most Valuable Player averaged more than 15 yards per completion and threw a touchdown on nine of his 20 completions.

Brown and Townsend accounted for eight of those scores and 217 receiving yards. Isiah Scott caught six passes for 69 yards and one touchdown, while Agiye Hall added two receptions for 18 yards.

Albany’s offense produced touchdowns on nine possessions and did not commit a turnover. Minnesota, meanwhile, lost the turnover battle 2-0 despite outgaining the Firebirds through the air by 112 yards.

Hale also gave Albany a major advantage in the kicking game. He converted seven of nine extra points and kicked three deuces, producing 13 points. Minnesota kicker Michael Hall made six of seven extra points and one deuce for eight points.

The teams combined for 125 points, 720 passing yards and 17 touchdown passes in an explosive semifinal that remained undecided until Albany’s final possession.

Albany improved to 10-3 and moved within one victory of repeating as AF1 champion. The Firebirds won the league’s inaugural Arena Crown last season after finishing 12-0, defeating Nashville 60-57 in the championship game.

Minnesota finished 9-5 after winning seven of its final nine games. The Monsters had advanced with a 48-32 quarterfinal victory over Washington but could not overcome Albany’s nearly flawless offensive performance.

The result also completed a season sweep for the Firebirds, who defeated Minnesota 50-23 in the April 11 season opener at MVP Arena.
